Commissioned by Offaly County Council
Tullamore Central Library was a project commissioned by Offaly County Council in 2010 to refurbish alter and extend the existing library in Tullamore incorporating the former Offaly VEC office and Offaly County Council Motor Tax Office.
The project brief included the provision of a distribution centre for the County Library Service as well as training and meeting rooms.
The enormous potential of this Town Centre site was critical to the success of the project in the long term and the design solution and building contract included substantial works to the rear of the building to open up access and views of the Tullamore River and to open up access onto the disused bridge over the river.
New extensions were punched out to the front into O’Connor Square and to the rear towards the river with the intention of increasing natural daylight in the building and opening the building out to the public, particularly on O’Connor Square.
The library floor area has expanded substantially and administration, meeting rooms and archive and distribution storage have been located at first floor level. The Library was completed in July 2012 at a cost of €1,710,000
