Loughagar National School

Following preparation of an initial feasibility comparison of the existing site and the options of new build versus extension and refurbishment it was decided that the most viable option for the project was to construct a new school on the site.

The new school planned as a 6 classroom school with GP room and ancillary accommodation was increased to 8 classrooms at contract stage to cater for the future growth of the school.

A curved wall separates the new school from the original school and acted as a buffer during construction. The curve is puncuated by the staff room window which allows supervision of the main play areas of the school by all staff.

Behind the wall the ancillary accommodation is concealed with two breakout wings to the south, one a classroom block and the other towards the main entrance encorporating the GP room. A larch framed pergola formas a welcoming approach from the school gates to the main entrance.

The school building was completed in April 2011 at a cost of €1,391,956
